Sustainability — Sumba Wellness’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability & Community Impact: Our Regenerative Promise

At Sumba Wellness, our definition of luxury is inextricably linked to responsibility. We believe that true wellness cannot be achieved at the expense of the environment or local communities. Our mission is not just to be sustainable, but to be regenerative—to ensure that every journey we facilitate leaves Sumba’s pristine ecosystems and unique cultural heritage more vibrant and resilient than before. This commitment is not an afterthought; it is woven into the very fabric of our operations, from our head office to the most remote village we visit.

Environmental Stewardship

Sumba’s raw, natural beauty—its savannas, coastlines, and reefs—is its most precious asset. We are fierce guardians of this treasure.

  • Carbon Neutral Operations: We meticulously track the carbon footprint of every journey, including all international and domestic flights (e.g., Garuda Indonesia from Bali to Tambolaka), ground transportation, and lodge operations. We then purchase high-quality, VERRA-certified carbon offsets from projects like the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Kalimantan to render every trip 100% carbon neutral.
  • Zero Single-Use Plastic Policy: We enforce a strict ban on single-use plastics across all our operations and with our partners. Guests are provided with personalized, reusable water flasks, and all amenities are supplied in refillable, non-plastic containers.
  • Water Sovereignty: In an arid climate like Sumba’s, water is life. We exclusively partner with lodges that have robust water management systems, including rainwater harvesting and advanced greywater recycling for irrigation, minimizing the strain on local aquifers.
  • Active Conservation Support: We pledge a minimum of 2% of our annual profits to our conservation partners. This funding directly supports The Sumba Foundation’s well-drilling projects and The Nature Conservancy Indonesia’s efforts to protect the vital marine ecosystems of the Savu Sea.

Community Empowerment & Cultural Preservation

Our relationship with the Sumbanese people is one of partnership and deep respect, guided by the principles of ethical tourism.

  • Local First Employment: We are proud that over 90% of our on-the-ground team—guides, drivers, facilitators, and villa staff—are hired from local Sumbanese communities. We provide competitive wages, benefits including BPJS health insurance, and ongoing professional development training.
  • Fair & Direct Compensation: When we facilitate experiences in local villages or with Marapu shamans, we do so based on a model of prior consent and direct, transparent compensation. A significant portion of the fee goes directly to the family or a community-managed fund, not just a single leader. This is a core tenet of our vetting process.
  • Championing Local Enterprise: We have built a resilient local supply chain. The organic vegetables in our meals are sourced from community farms near our partner lodges. The beautiful, hand-woven Ikat textiles used in our villas are purchased at fair-trade prices from women’s weaving cooperatives in East Sumba, preserving this vital cultural art form.
  • The Sumba Wellness Community Fund: Beyond donations, we actively manage an annual fund dedicated to a specific, community-chosen project. This year, our focus is on providing scholastic materials and solar lighting to the primary school in the Tarimbang region, enabling children to study after dark.

Our commitment to sustainability is transparent and measurable. We are dedicated to proving that ultra-luxury travel can be a powerful force for positive change. Our standards demand we report on our progress honestly and hold ourselves accountable to our promises.
